Today ended about a month of speculating as to who the first three captains picks for Team USA would be. At 5pm East Coast time Jim Furyk announced that Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods and Bryson DeChambeau would be his first three choices. The final choice comes on the Monday after the Tour Championship later in the month.
Lets be real. The Three Blind Mice could have made these picks.
DeChambeau has been the hottest player in the planet. He finished 9th in points and then after the points closed he just went out and won the first two playoff events!
Mickelson has not missed a Ryder Cup since before Clinton was President. He finished 10th in points and is a great leader in the team room.
With how great Woods has been playing in big events this year (see the second place finish at The PGA) and his history in the Ryder Cup they had to move him from being a Vice Captain to player. He also plays a lot of practice rounds with DeChambeau and they play the same golf ball so they are easy to pair together in the Better Ball or Alternate Shot portions.
Furyk also announced his Vice Captains for the event. He will be taking Zach Johnson, Matt Kuchar and David Duval along for the trip to France to assist him. The first two names there shouldn’t really surprise anyone. Both will be future captains and Kuchar and Mickelson can have their epic ping pong matches in the team room. Duval is an interesting choice. I’m really not sure how he fits in because he really doesn’t have the resume that the other two players have and will probably never be a captain of the team where the other two are almost locks. Honestly I’m surprised it isn’t Jimmy Walker.
Dads Say So, tomorrow the European team will be picking. I’m going to go out on a limb and say that Ian Poulter is probably a lock for one of the four picks tomorrow. If I had a crystal ball for the final USA captains pick I would have to go with Tony Fineau. He makes a lot of birdies and that is key in match play. They have already picked the hottest player in DeChambeau so it does free up that final pick. For now we can watch the BMW CHampionship this week and see if DeChambeau can win the first 3 events.
