I’m sitting here tonight thinking about the week that was at the 100th PGA Championship. On what started off as a normal week out there for the players had a rain storm come in on Friday afternoon that made for the most exciting finish of the year!
At the highest level, players put themselves in position through 54 holes to give them a chance to win on Sunday. Today was slightly different. The who’s who in golf were all on the leaderboard and they turned it into a shootout.
The storm that came through Friday afternoon softened up the course enough over the weekend that the players knew they could be aggressive and fire at any flag they wanted to. Tour players love soft conditions. Each and every one of them hit the ball far enough so when it is soft they can take dead aim and fire at every flag on the course.
Going into Sunday Brooks Koepka held a 2 shot lead on the field. There were some HUGE names chasing him. Adam Scott, Tiger Woods, Jon Rahm, Gary Woodland, Justin Thomas and Rickey Fowler were all lurking.
Thomas Pieters went out early and made a charge, showing the leaders that there were plenty of birdies to be made. It seemed that everyone took notice.
The round of the day from the leaders belonged to Tiger Woods. If there was a question about TIger’s game this year it was his Sunday finishes. Today he slammed the door on that when his 15 footer on 18 found the bottom of the cup and it gave him a solo second place finish, just two shots back.
Tiger’s round included missing every fairway on the front 9 and making 4 birdies to shoot 33. I am sure somewhere Seve is up in heaven applauding him for the round that he played today.
Koepka went out and did what he had to do today to make the players come and get him. He played a very solid round of golf and took advantage of the golf course when it allowed him to. At the end of the day, he was the last man standing and they he won his 3rd major in 14 months!
The week of the US Open, we really bashed the USGA for their course set up errors. I sure hope that Mike Davis and his team were watching this week. It proved that even par is not the most important thing in golf. The team at the PGA of America that set up the golf course did an amazing job giving players opportunities to hit quality golf shots and get rewarded for them.
The week of the US Open everyone was talking about the USGA for all of the wrong reasons. This week they will be talking about the PGA Championship for all of the right reasons and how they got it right! Sunday afternoon was almost as exciting as The Masters (but we wait all winter for that so it is always the best thing all year).
Dads Say So, Congratulations to Brooks Koepka. Koepka has won 4 times on the PGA Tour and 3 of them are majors. That is a pretty amazing feat. Also, congratulations to Tiger Woods for a great week. This is the last year that the PGA will be the final major of the year. After this week were glad that we don’t have to wait as long for next years event. If it is half as exciting it will still be the most exciting major of the year.
