The golf gods giveth the golf gods taketh away. That is the story of the 2017 Valspar Championship.
Adam “Mr. 59” Hadwin played some great golf early in the week and entered Sunday with a four shot lead. Patrick Cantlay played some great golf on Sunday and was tied for the lead with 2 holes to play. Its funny how a 72 hole tournament comes down to a hole or two that decide the winners and losers.
Hadwin had a two shot lead with three holes when he fanned his tee shot on the first hole of the snake pit and it ended up finding the water on the hole known as moccasin. After making a double it was all square with two holes to play.
After matching pars on 17 they went to 18 all square. Cantlay hit his approach shot into the bunker and Hadwin hit his over the back of the green into the fringe and up against the rough collar.
If Cantlay could have hit a bunker shot and made an up and down this week (1 for 6) he would have won this tournament. Instead Hadwin hit a great bladed wedge from behind the 18th green to two feet and tapped in for par and the win.
Dads Say So that this was a great week in Tampa at Innisbrook. Adam Hadwin getting a win means he not only gets into the field next week at Bay Hill but it gets him into the fields for The Masters and The Players. He also becomes fully exempt for this year and next. This is great for him! As we get closer to The Masters its always fun to see players who are not in the field get a win to get them in!
