Waking up today was even easier than when your alarm is set to get up and play golf.  Being able to see where the USA team stood in the middle of round one was the first thing that was pulled up on the iPad to watch.

The scoring when we turned it on was about where we expected.  One of the things we didn’t expect was to try to determine who was on the USA Team based on the uniforms they were wearing.  The European team wore navy and red with a white logo it looked a little different.

The matches went back and forth as we expected them to.  When it was all said and done here is how the matches turned out.

Match 1

On 16 Tony Finau got a break in the match.  Being 1 down in the match he pulled his tee shot slightly and had it land on one of the rail road ties.  After bouncing up in the air and land inside 5 feet of the flag.  His birdie squared the match with 2 holes remaining.  Going to 18 all square when Rahm necked his driver into the right rough.  Rose split the fairway but his approach shot finally stopped it was in the water behind the 18th green.  Whten Koepka hit his lag to a foot Rahm’s putt skirted past the edge and the US stole a match they only led in on the final hole.

Match 2

DJ and Fowler were dormie coming to 16 when DJ hit his iron shot to 4 feet just over the flag stick.  It was interesting to see Rory continue his poor play from last Sunday.  When Rory missed his putt on 16 they conceded the match to the Americans for the first point on the board!

Match 3

Justin Thomas ruffled the flag stick on his approach to 15 and made a birdie to take a 1 up lead in a match where they were 3 up at one point and the European team rallied to square the match.

Match 4

Woods and Reed were 2 up at one point when Molinari made a charge and squared the match on the back nine.  Tommy Fleetwood took over on 15 making a birdie from off the green and then making a bomb on 16 to go to 2 up with 2 to play.

The afternoon matches went out shortly after the morning rounds finished. The European squad gained a lot of momentum in winning the final match of the morning.  They came out in the afternoon on fire and the US Team didn’t have a response for the barrage that was coming their way.

Match 5

DJ and Rickie were 3 down thru 7 to Rose and Stenson who had widened the lead to 5 before the US Team had too little too late.  The European Team won 3 & 2.

Match 6

Bubba and Webb were 2 up through 3 holes and we thought there was hope here in this match early but Poulter and McIlroy won holes 6 thru 9 and ended up winning 4 & 2.

Match 7

Mickelson and DeChambeau found themselves 7 down after 9 holes to Garcia and Noren.  They were too far back to mount any kind of a comeback.  There were a lot of questionable decisions in this match.  Including Mickelson hitting a 5 iron off of the tee on a par 5.  He snap hooked it into the water!  Garcia and Noren won 5 & 4.

Match 8

Spieth and Thomas went 3 down thru 6 and couldn’t make any putts against Molinari and Fleetwood.  The European Team won this match 5 & 4 to close out the afternoon sweep.

Saturday morning will see the teams playing fourball again.  The US Team looks to get some of their momentum back.  They are sending the same pairings out that they sent out on Friday morning in hopes to find some magic.  The matches will be:

Match 9

Finau & Koepka vs Garcia & McIlroy.

This is interesting in that it puts McIlroy with his 3rd different partner in 3 matches.  Lets hope Finau and Koepka can keep up the great play they displayed early in the morning on Friday and hopes that they can get some red on the board early.

Match 10

Johnson & Fowler vs Casey & Hatton

After losing on Friday morning Casey and Hatton spent the afternoon as spectators.  Lets hope Johnson and Fowler can regain their form and capture a point here.

Match 11

Woods & Reed vs Molinari & Fleetwood

In a rematch of the only morning point that Europe made in the morning matches here is to hoping that changing the date on the calendar will cool down this European team.  Woods and Reed are going to need to go out early and get on the board early in hopes to slow them down.

Match 12

Thomas & Spieth vs Poulter & Rahm

This is going to be a fun match to watch.  There is going to be a lot of gamesmanship in this match with Poulter and Thomas.  There will also be a lot of passion from both sides and that will be very exciting.  We may want a front row seat for this match tomorrow.

Dads Say So, the USA team may have taken the first shot today but the European Team gave them all they could handle after Fleetwood’s birdie on 15.  The USA needs to get out to a hot start on Saturday morning.  They need to  try to get the momentum back on their side.  Based on the pairings it is going to be tough to do.  Before you get up and watch that college football make sure you turn on the Ryder Cup and cheer on team USA.  We will be!
