Football is the most popular sport in the world. Everyone loves the excitement and constant action of it. NFL Football Players go and do various things after their careers are over but their local chapters of their Alumni Association do various events throughout the year to have all of the players get together.
On Monday, Steve got to play in the Central Florida Chapter of the NFL Alumni Association Charity Tournament. The tournament was at Grand Cypress Golf Club on the North and South Courses and was a five person scramble with every group having a former NFL Player with them. Steve played with his friends from Golf Tournaments Made Easy and along with Matt, Mo and John we were paired up with Aaron Jones, former Pittsburgh Steeler! The group had an awesome time and there were a ton of laughs along the way.
We were there for a reason and that was to win the tournament. The winning team won an all expense trip to Las Vegas in April for the NFL Super Bowl of Golf and their national finals. The format was a 5 person scramble and the top three teams played off for the trip. We shot 52 on our own and felt like our chances were good as we had the lowest total score. The top three teams played off for the one spot to Las Vegas.
The playoff format was different than the scramble we played for 18 holes. It was five person alternate shot! You had to pick who was going to play each shot. Steve hit the drive, Matt played the second shot, Mo played the third, John played the fourth and Aaron was our anchor man.
So if you have never played tournament golf, to stand up on a tee with 14 other people watching you, some with Super Bowl Rings, and your team pulling for you, there is a huge amount of pressure on the line to get the ball in play. No matter where you play in the order every shot when there is an all expense trip to Las Vegas on the line has pressure.
Unfortunately, we lost on the third playoff hole today. Congrats to Isaac Byrd’s team as they came out victorious and our heading to Vegas in April.
Some of the cool things that they did on the course were having a long drive competitor hitting drives for the teams on the first hole, a contest to donate money to a charity to move your ball up to the 100 yard marker on a par 5, and the team from the new Top Golf Orlando were out there promoting their great venue. It was a great way to give back to the charitable organizations that the local chapter of the Alumni Association assists. We always love to see people give back in the community.
Dads Say So, first and foremost we want to give a huge thank you to Seneca McMillan, the President of the NFL Alumni Association Chapter her in Central Florida. No, he and Steve are not related, although there was a lot of discussion today about being brothers from a different mother, but he stepped out of his comfort zone and organized an amazing event. He didn’t hit a shot today as he is about to have knee surgery but organizing an event of this magnitude is not an easy task. Kudos to Matt Clinger for being the golf organization behind this amazing event! Being able to get out and tee it up with a former NFL player, have some fun, and possibly win a trip to Las Vegas is a great time. There are more of these events going on around the country and all of them have a chance to go to Las Vegas on the line to compete in the national finals. Find the one nearest you and get your team to go and play. It’s a blast!
