Day one of the Presidents Cup went pretty close to as we expected. Our predictions said that it would be 3 to 2 and when the dust settled today it was 3 1/2 to 1 1/2 with the US Team leading. The theme of the day was wind with gusts over 20 mph throughout the afternoon. To breakdown the matches:
Justin Thomas & Rickie Fowler vs Hideki Matsuyama & Charl Schwartzel US win 6 & 4
This match was a little more one-sided than we thought but Matsuyama didn’t putt well but Thomas and Fowler are playing really well and made 4 birdies and after losing the second hole they never looked back. We were not really surprised in the outcome.
Matt Kuchar & Dustin Johnson vs Adam Scott and Jhonattan Vegas US win 1 up
With a birdie on 16 the US Team took the lead and halved the final two holes to hold off the International Team. The Internationals had the lead 2 up thru 2 holes and the US Team just steadied the ship and had squared the match at on 10. This was a great back and forth match.
Jordan Spieth & Patrick Reed vs Emiliano Grillo & Si Woo Kim US Wins 5 & 4
This was the match where we called the International Team the sacrificial lambs and we were pretty close to being right. The US Team was 3 up at the turn and even with losing the 10th they won the 11th and closed out the match on the 14th hole.
Daniel Berger & Brooks Koepka vs Branden Grace & Louis Oosthuizen International Wins 3 & 1
The US Team squared the match on 10 but lost the lead on 13. The strongest International Team kept the pedal down and this match never saw the 18th hole.
Phil Mickelson & Kevin Kisner vs Marc Leishman & Jason Day Match Halved
This match was a back and forth match with the US team 3 up through 7 holes but by the time they got through 11 the match was all square. The Internationals had the lead on 17 tee and the US Team squared the match. Mickelson had a 7 footer to win the match but missed it and it ended in a half.
Friday’s Four Ball Matches
Jordan Spieth & Patrick Reed vs Hediki Matsuyama & Adam Hadwin
After watching the way the US Team played today you can’t really pick against them. Hadwin is a rookie here and Matsuyama couldn’t find his putter today.
Louis Oostheisen & Branden Grace vs Rickie Fowler & Justin Thomas
This may be the best match of the day. The best International Team taking on a team that won 6 & 4 in Fowler and Thomas. This will be a fun match to watch but were leaning towards the American Duo.
Phil Mickelson & Kevin Kisner vs Jason Day & Marc Leishman
This one has all of the makings of an International win. Day in better ball is tough to beat and after the roller coaster of momentum today were going to pick them to upset Mickelson and Kisner.
Charl Schwartzel & Anirban Lahari vs Kevin Chappell & Charlie Hoffman
This is an interesting match up. The two US Players who sat out today and the questionable International Captains Pick. We will take the wild card US Team to win this.
Dustin Johnson & Brooks Koepka vs Adam Scott & Jhonattan Vegas
This match is going to be the long drive contest with Adam Scott being the shortest hitter in the group. Based on how they played today were going to take the US Team in what could be a blow out if DJ gets it going.
Dads Say So, we were excited to see the outcome of Day 1. Day 2 should expect the same fireworks with the International Team knowing that they will need to win the day to gain a lot of momentum going into the weekend. We hope that the US Team has the same result today and widen the lead out tomorrow and put even more pressure on the Internationals.
