Round 1 of The PGA Championship is now in the books and it was a day that we really expected. A few players grinded out good rounds, some players had some great rounds and then a couple surprises that tend to happen at a major that make you scratch your head.
First the leaders, Thorbjorn Olesen and Kevin Kisner both carded rounds of -4 to set the pace for the day. Both players had a pretty steady round that both included 6 birdies and 2 bogies and both players birdied the last to get to -4.
There are a handful of players one shot back at -3 that include the reigning US Open winner Brooks Koepka and last weeks winner Chris Stroud. Dustin Johnson is 3 back at -1.
A couple surprises today were the defending champion Jimmy Walker shooting +10 and another past champion in Phil Mickelson shooting +8? Those are some real surprises because Phil needed a good week to look at getting his spot on The Presidents Cup team.
A couple players grinded out rounds of +1 today. They were the two favorites, Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy. Spieth had to birdie two of the last three to get to +1. McIlroy was two under through 10 but a bogey and a double coming in pushed him back to that +1 number.
Dads Say So it was a fairly typical opening round of a major today. A few surprises and a few question marks that we all scratched our head at. There were a lot of great players, like Rickie Fowler and Gary Woodland, who have put themselves in a lurking position to attempt to get their first major. The green mile played difficult due to the 515 yard 16th hole. There were a lot of players that it claimed victim today including a double by Sergio Garcia. The golf course did look worthy of a Major Championship course and that is awesome to see. Lets hope that Friday brings the same great golf that we had today.
