This week the British Open goes back to one of the rota courses that they go back to every few years in Royal Birkdale. Royal Birkdale is in Southport in the UK and is one of the greatest golf courses in the world.
Past champions at Royal Birkdale are Arnold Palmer, Peter Thompson, Lee Trevino, Johnny Miller, Tom Watson, Ian Baker-Finch, Mark O’Meara and Padrig Harrington. This is an amazing group of past champions.
The course will play as a par 70 (34-36) and will be a stern test of golf. The finishing two holes are a 567 yard par 5 and a 473 yard par 4. Protecting a one shot lead is going to be difficult with the well protected fairways and greens with the pot bunkers throughout the hole. There are no par 5’s on the front 9 so the easiest birdies holes will come on the back 9 for the players.
Royal Birkdale has had a who’s who list of past champions. All but the last 3 are in the World Golf Hall of Fame. We expect the cream to rise to the top again this week and have a great champion.
Dads Say So The British Open is an amazing event contested on links courses, many of which were not created by man but created by the land they are on and the weather as it allowed the courses to be formed to the land. Sure the greens will be slower this week because of the wind and we do expect to see some rain gear and some of, what we in Florida call, winter wear, but it wouldn’t be a British Open with out it. This is sure to be a fun week where at the end we expect Royal Birkdale to be as much of the star as the Champion Golfer of the Year will be.
