This week we played Crooked Cat at Orange County National. This is a Golf Digest 4 1/2 star course that has hosted PGA, Champions and Web.com qualifying school and is home to Demo Day for the PGA Merchandise show every January.
Orange County National has two 18 hole courses, the other being Panther Lake, and they have The Tooth, a 9 hole course designed to work on your game. Its also a great course for beginners and if you need to sneak in a quick 9 you can easily get it in there. We will review the other courses at a later date.
Crooked Cat can play almost 7500 yards from the back tees (if your up for that challenge) down to 5100 yards from the forward tees. There are 5 sets of tees for you to choose from so make sure you pick the right set for your ability and where you can have the most fun.
The staff there are always there to lend a helping hand. From bag drop, to the pro shop and restaurant, and on course staff they are always making sure you have a great experience. Bill at the bag drop is one of our favorites in the area. He always greets you with a smile and is the most helpful person you will find.
Crooked Cat opens with a shorter length par 5. The front 9 has some really fun holes including the 9th which for the bigger hitters can be driveable depending on the wind direction. If you are a longer hitter the safe play can be a more difficult shot to position the ball in the correct portion.
The back 9 starts with 3 of the harder holes in a row you will every play. The 10th is a dogleg left par 4 that is up hill and you need to make sure you are positioned so you are not behind a tree. 11 is a straight away par 4 that narrows in the landing area with trees down either side of the fairway. The green is very undulated and you need to make sure you keep the ball in the correct portion. The 12th hole is The Golfing Dads favorite hole in Central Florida. It is a downhill tee shot on a dogleg right hole with water down the entire right side of the hole and a long sloping green that if you are at all off target you will find the water. The rest of the back 9 is very exciting including 2 par 5’s that you can be very aggressive on.
