Skin Cancer has become a very hot button issue in golf. Steve’s dad, Mike, has had his battles with it and as a result needs to wear UV Sleeves when he plays golf. Back in January when we were at the PGA Merchandise Show Mike got a pair of IceRays Sun Sleeves to try out. IceRays is offering UV arm protection with lightweight sleeves.
The IceRays sleeve is seamless and does not have what feels like tight bands to hold the sleeve in place around the upper arm. The IceRays material feels smooth and soft to the touch and very comfortable.
While wearing the IceRay sleeves, we observed the sleeve did not bunch up around the wrist and elbow. Once on the arm, a sleeve did not “slide” down the arm while playing several 18 hole rounds in Central Florida. We did not have to continually pull the sleeve back up to keep it in place on our arms. While snug to the arm, the sleeve did not feel like our skin was being squeezed.
Another fact by the IceRays representative was that the sleeve will keep a player’s arms cool. This was very true. As we played from morning into early afternoon, our arms did not feel hot and, in fact, felt cool to the couch. Of note, the temperature was 96º.
After wearing the sleeves for a round of golf, we followed the directions and hand washed the sleeve with mild soap before hanging up to dry in a shady place. We noticed the sleeve dried quickly and didn’t shrink at all.
The product is available in several colors and is made up of 92% Tactel and 8% Spandex. Marketing material reviewed indicates sleeves are certified 50+ for UV protection. Additionally, IceRays claims the sleeves are 99.7% effective protection against UV-A and 99.6% UV-B rays. With IceRays, messy sun screen does not have to be applied (and reapplied) on a player’s arms for protection during a round of golf.
